A
Divided Nation?
You Butter Believe It!
Do you buy a cube of butter or a stick of butter? It all depends upon
where you live. In the Eastern
United States, butter is sold in long, skinny sticks. In the Western
United States, butter is most often sold in fat cubes.
It is no surprise that there are large political and cultural variations
across the United States, since the U.S. is so large in size, covering over 3.5
million square miles. But who would have thought that the size of
butter that is sold would be so different? Even national brands like
Land O'Lakes have different sizes based upon where you live.
In the East, all Land
O'Lakes butter is the Eastern stick shape. In the West, some Land
O'Lakes is the Eastern shape and some of it is the Western shape.
The original One Click Butter Cutter was designed to handle the Eastern-shape
sticks, and if you live East of the rocky mountains, your grocery store
probably has lots of varieties of butter to choose from that will all work
easily in the Original One Click Butter Cutter. The Eastern-style stick shape
is also called the Elgin shape, named after the the Elgin Butter Company, of
Elgin, Illinois which was founded in 1871.
However, if you live West of the Rockies, you may need to purchase the Multi-Size One Click Butter Cutter. The butter you buy may be Elgin Style or
it may be the Western shape. In this case, you may need to measure your
butter to decide which One Click Butter Cutter to buy. Both shapes will
fit into the Multi-Size One Click Butter Cutter.
Which Butter Cutter Should I Buy?
The best way to be certain that your favorite butter will fit into the One
Click Butter Cutter is for you to measure the butter. The length is the
easiest thing to measure. If your butter is 5" long, then it will work in
the original One Click Butter Cutter. If your butter is only 3.5"
long, then it will only work in the Multi-Size One Click Butter
Cutter.
Quarter Pound Stick of Butter (Length=5") =
Original One Click Butter Cutter
(Approximate Measurements for an Eastern Style (Elgin) Stick of Butter is: 1.25" x 1.25" x 5")
Quarter Pound Cube of Butter (Length =3.5") = Multi-Size One Click Butter Cutter
(Approximate
Measurements for a Western Style Cube of Butter is: 1.5" x 1.5" x 3.5")
The Multi-Size One Click Butter Cutter is designed to handle the short yet
fat butter cubes that are most common in the Pacific United States. For
people in other parts of the United States, you will likely find that the
original One Click Butter Cutter size will work fine.
